Men's Body Hair Basics

Body hair is everywhere. Or at least it often seems that way. Back hair isn't such a big deal in the winter, but as summer approaches and a guy would rather flaunt a smoother, less simian look, figuring out what to do about it and other unsightly types of body hair suddenly becomes a bigger deal. Thus, in the spirit of better summer and spring grooming, we present 10 things men should know about body hair.

We Have Body Hair In The Womb

The first thing men should know about body hair is that it starts before we're even born. The thought or the image of a cute little unborn werewolf in utero is troubling for many reasons, but, fortunately, by the time the child is ready to join the world, he or she has shed this first round of body hair, known as lanugo. Made up of small and extremely fine hairs, lanugo covers almost the entire infant's body. You're probably better off not knowing how we, as womb-restricted babies, get rid of it, but for educational purposes, it involves ingestion and our first bowel movement. Round one of the battle against body hair is generally over before we take our first breath of air.

We Have Three Different Types Of Body Hair

Lanugo is the first type of body hair you'll have, and it is succeeded by soft, fine, colorless hairs called vellus, known colloquially as peach fuzz. Vellus hair isn’t attached to any subcutaneous tissue nor is it connected to any sebaceous glands. This is in stark contrast to the last type, terminal hair, which greets us at puberty. Much more coarse than vellus, with subcutaneous tissue (which helps to anchor it and contributes to the pain experienced when yanked), terminal hair is also joined by sebaceous glands that contribute to the body odor that no embarrassed pubescent kid should be without.

Most Women Prefer Men Who Groom Their Body Hair

One thing men should know about body hair is how women feel about it. Let's face it, compared to women, we guys have it pretty good when it comes to dealing with body hair. A hairy chest may not do it for every woman in every era, but at least it's socially acceptable. In Western culture, women are pressured to remove any vestige of visible body hair, save for in a few spots, and the upkeep is nothing to sneeze at. But surveys frequently show that women wouldn't mind it if men did a little more body hair maintenance as well, although their demands tend to be far less strenuous. In most instances -- even in the case of back hair -- women just want to see some effort at good grooming..

Each Body Hair Is Guarded By Tiny Glands

As mentioned, with the onset of puberty, we lose much of our vellus hair, and it is replaced by terminal hair. This thicker hair comes armed with what are known as sebaceous glands, or glands that produce a protective substance known as sebum. Sebum acts to protect the skin and hair follicle from bacteria. That's the good part. The not-so-good part is that it breaks down that bacteria, and the breakdown is responsible for body odor.

We May Have Swapped Body Hair For Body Fat

Responding to a reader's question about body hair, Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist Alexis McKinnis offers up a fascinating hypothesis regarding the relationship between body hair and body fat: "[Humans] may... have started shedding fur as we acclimated to living near the sea. Less body hair makes for a more streamlined swimmer or fisherman, and our unusually high amount of body fat (in comparison with our mammalian relatives) was produced to compensate for the loss of protective warmth."

Body Hair Serves Two Main Purposes

For the most part we humans have evolved beyond relying on body hair for survival, but it still does have several basic functions: In cold weather, body hair can help the body retain heat, and, in hot weather, as we sweat, body hair can work to wick moisture away from the skin like a good golf shirt.

A Man’s Amount Of Body Hair Is Directly Correlated To Intelligence

Sasquatchian guys with body hair to spare, take heart: According to one American psychiatrist, the more body hair you’ve got, the smarter you are. In a 1996 study widely cited by the media (but curiously difficult to find in published form online), Dr. Aikarakudy Alias told the Eighth Congress of the Association of European Psychiatrists that higher intelligence -- gauged by academic rankings -- is correlated with higher amounts of body hair on men.

Body Hair Is Muscular... Kind Of

Don't try flexing it, as you’ll fail miserably, but your body hair does indeed have muscle cells. These smooth (not under your conscious control) arrector pili muscles cells hide behind body hair and like to flex (well, contract, actually) under specific conditions, such as when you're suddenly exposed to cold temperatures or you think you just saw a ghost. The consequence is that your hairs stand on end.

Body Hair Grows Faster In The Summer

According to Brian Thompson, a hair specialist at New York City’s Philip Kingsley Trichological Clinic, body hair does, in fact, grow slightly faster in the spring and summer. As for the reason why, some have suggested that it has to do with the body's speedier metabolism during those months. In any case, the faster growth only applies to androgenic hair (scalp and other hair whose growth is influenced by hormones).

Some Body Hair Works To Attract The Opposite Sex

It may not make sense, but the body hair that attracts the opposite sex is not found anywhere on our heads. According to Dr. Marc A. Pomerantz of the Chicago Hair Institute, both pubic hair and underarm hair act to catch and then dry special hormones secreted by the body so that they can ride the wind and reach the olfactory senses of the opposite sex.

Foods for Hair Care

Having a full head of hair isn’t every man’s dream. In fact, some men embrace their baldness, but let’s face it: If you do have hair and want to stay looking as young as possible, then you probably want the hair on your head to be thick, lustrous and shiny. While all the secrets to healthy hair haven’t been figured out, scientists have identified a handful of nutrients that relate to hair health in some way or another. Include foods with these nutrients in your diet, and you’ll be improving the chances of keeping your mane as full as ever.

Prunes
Aside from keeping your bowels running like a Porsche 911 Carrera S engine, prunes can also help improve your hair because they are one of very few non-meat sources of iron. Although it’s not exactly clear how iron helps hair, it is well known that individuals who are iron-deficient can experience profound changes to their hair (e.g., hair loss, dryness, thinning, stiffness, and discoloration).

Green Peas

Although you don’t often see green peas labeled as a superfood, it might be a good time to start regarding them as such. It’s not that they’re teeming with antioxidants or any specific vitamin or mineral. No. On the contrary, green peas are instead very well balanced, offering a vast array of vitamins and minerals in reasonable amounts, including those that are important for healthy hair, like iron, zinc and B vitamins (deficiencies of these elements have been linked to unhealthy hair changes)

Shrimp

We already know that we should limit our red meats, but for men trying to build muscle, finding a protein replacement can be tough. Well, how about shrimp? Not only are these tiny crustaceans delicious served over pasta and red wine, but they’ll also help you keep your hair! Shrimp are an excellent source of vitamin B12, iron and zinc -- key vitamins and minerals that you’ll need in your fight against hair loss.

Steel-Cut Oats

Like prunes, oats are loaded with more than enough fiber to help you maintain a healthy heart and bowels, but beyond fiber, oats are also jam-packed full of other important nutrients, like zinc, iron and omega-6 fatty acids. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-6 fatty acids are essential to normal skin, hair growth and development. Omega-6 fatty acids are also essential in the sense that they must be obtained from the diet -- so don’t be afraid to throw down a nice big bowl of oatmeal now and again.

Kidney Beans

Legumes like kidney beans have long been touted for their healthy-hair-promoting properties. Not only are they a great non-meat source of iron and zinc, but they’re also a great source of protein. Studies have shown that severe protein deficiency can lead to unhealthy hair or hair loss and thinning, more specifically. In fact, changes to hair were even considered as a means of identifying protein malnutrition in hospitalized patients back in the 1970s.

Walnuts

Pound for pound, walnuts are incredibly hair-friendly. Not only do walnuts have more omega-6 fatty acids than any other food, but they’re also full of zinc, iron, B vitamins (B1, B6 and B9), and plenty of protein. Of note, however, walnuts also contain a small trace of selenium, a mineral known to cause hair loss in people who are selenium-deficient or have way too much in their system.

Pumpkin Seeds

Like walnuts, pumpkin seeds are loaded with all the nutrients that your hair could ever want, like protein, omega-6 fatty acids, zinc and iron. What’s even more exciting is that pumpkin seeds, like other seeds, can be easily combined with nuts for a delicious trail mix. Just throw together a handful of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, almonds, and raisins in a bag, and you have yourself the perfect hair-revitalization snack!

Eggs

You’d probably never guess it, but eggs will put some hair on your chest (and they’ll help maintain the hair on your head, too). That’s because eggs contain major hair nutrients in large amounts. This includes protein, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and even omega-6 fatty acids. Deficiencies in any of these have been linked to unhealthy hair. Eggs are also a rich source of biotin (vitamin B7), which is often prescribed alongside other medications to fight hair loss.

Calf Liver

No one ever said eating healthy was easy. Though you might not consider calf liver a necessary component of a well-balanced healthy-hair diet, it’s tough to ignore the fact that each ounce of liver gives you almost three times the daily requirement of vitamin B12, along with a hearty serving of biotin, other B vitamins, iron, zinc, and protein -- many nutrients that promote healthy hair. So, next time you’re staring at the meat rack in your local grocery store, just remember that there were reasons your mom made you eat liver and onions besides as punishment.

Sardines

While you might find few things more disgusting than peeling back a tin of sardines only to catch the sight and smell of several small fish all lined in a row, some men actually welcome the taste of this smoky treat. Maybe it’s time you did, too. Not only do sardines come fully loaded with protein, iron, zinc, and an insane amount of vitamin B12, but sardines are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids and the ever-important vitamin D, both of which have been linked to preventing hair loss in chemotherapy patients. When it comes to healthy hair, sardines are a man’s best friend.

Sexy Summer Make-Up

Get sexy summer makeup ideas and looks to enhance your summer tanned skin with makeup looks that are great for breezy summer days and party!
Golden Goddess
Shades of champagne, bronze, honey and straw beautifully illuminate eyelids – especially on sun-kissed skin – the look is perfect for easy, breezy summer days. Keep skin radiant and clean with foundation where needed and a light balm on lips and opt for high SPF products.
Don’t get carried away with the bronze theme though, overly tanned skin will look passe, so instead concentrate on achieving a flawless, honeyed hue.
A tiny dab of cream bonzer dotted onto the apples of the cheeks will add a light-catching glow that won’t detract from the main attraction: your eyes makeup!

Colorful Eyelids
Let your inner child get creative with color this season – the rules are there ain’t no rules this summer! Think playful pigments on lips and cheekbones dusted with candyfloss pink. Try eyes doused in glitter, neon shades out of a Crayola box.

Smokey Eyes
Magical violet tones never go out of style and this summer it is paired with shiny peach and coral tones. Smoke up your eyes for a night-out to complement your summer glow: use a shimmery violet around the eyes blending it with soft peach and coral eyeshadow for a more estival look.
Add more depth with a black khol tracing a thin line along the upper and lower lashes, insisting at the outer corners.

Finish the look with two coats of mascara, a light pink blush blended to the temples and a touch of lip gloss.

Sweltering heat and humidity can wreak havoc with your summer makeup. Foundation may seem to melt or liquefy, and no powder stands up to those little beads of sweat that collect around your hairline. A modification of your regimen may be in order, and a few tricks will get you through a midday makeup meltdown.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Blush
  • Blush Brush
  • Cotton Swabs
  • Eye Shadow
  • Face Powder
  • Facial Tissues
  • Lip Balm
  • Lip Liners
  • Lipstick
  • Mascara
  • Oil-free Foundations
    • 1
Skip the foundation, if possible, and opt for a tinted moisturizer. If foundation is necessary, limit application to the center of the face, steering clear of the hairline.
    • 2
Consider switching to an oil-free formula during the summer months or dilute your everyday foundation with an oil-free moisturizer. This lighter coverage will fare better when temperatures heat up.
    • 3
Dust any coverage with a little loose powder. Use blush sparingly, letting your sun-kissed cheeks grab the attention.
    • 4
Blot any perspiration or oil buildup with non-powdered blotting papers. Or substitute a clean tissue, pressing gently into moist areas.
    • 5
Remove under-eye foundation or powder buildup with a clean cotton swab. Resist the temptation to reapply unless you feel it absolutely necessary.
    • 6
Reapply loose powder only. Pressed powder has the tendency to cake and clump when hit with moisture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep lips protected and moisturized. Use a lip balm that has an SPF and consider switching to a moisture-rich lipstick.
  • Battle summer blemishes with a superior nighttime treatment so there's less reason to cover up come morning.
  • Oil-free formulas may make dry skin drier.

Keeping the eyes fresh in summer is no doubt an important & attention grabbing task. Being one of the prominent features of the face, your eyes should look nice and fresh.
In summer this task becomes bit difficult because of the heat and perspiration etc. In case of make-up particularly, sweating kills your make-up efforts after some time.
In this regard, first thing is to protect your eyes from the ultra violet sun rays. In hot and humid day time your eyes need more care. So your eye make-up must be refreshing & soothing but with an eye-catchy look.
In summers mostly light colors shades are preferable; but of course they must be according to your eye shape. Also your dress color & the occasion or place you are going for is also essential to consider. Shades in pink, skin, peach, etc usually go best in summers. They gives you bit natural and simple look with featuring your eyes in an attractive way. Fair colored ladies should for pink shades and those who got the whitish or bit dark complexion should go for brown shades; in order to give the natural look.
For eye lashes choose the water proof mascaras and go for the pencil eye-liner. In day time for office or causal make-up, apply gray liner and for the night functions prefer black eye liner.
You should always have a non-powered blotting paper or absorbing tissue to remove the perspiration or extra oil; coming from the eye make-up. These things can seriously disturb your make-up.
Another important thing is to have a neatly made eye brow shape. Too thin eye brows are not ‘inn’ this season. Medium sized eye brows would flourish your eye make as well.
Prefer to remove your eye make-up softly & gently with an eye make remover and with a cotton mop.
